Got home from work (after stopping for gas) and found this:
Thinking back to my youth I don’t think I’ve ever done this before. Then again it could just be the age we live in, where even our mistakes need to be photographed, uploaded and shared on social media.... 10+ years ago if I had done this I probably wouldn’t have taken a pic and shared, so maybe I don’t remember?
Or, I really did just do that for the first time. Good thing I only had a 5 mile trip home, and no CEL because of it.

I did that once. Now I pay attention to what I’m doing instead of thinking of other things.

No fill handle? Then you’re good to go .

I did the same thing, but when I got home I realized I forgot my wife.

Guilty...Even drove away with the pump still in once. It was one of the newer “breakaway” hoses so no damage. Don’t drive tired.

Did you also lose your man card?

Could be worse, I discovered a few days ago that I had been driving for about 200 miles with the 710 cap still unscrewed after an oil change. OOOPS! Lost about a quart and a half...good thing I still had 6 quarts left to go and that I noticed it!

Give up your Jalop card instead. Man cards are stupid.

One time, I was on the highway and saw worse. The filler door was closed with the cap dangling. How distracted must someone be to push the cap aside and close the door?

I lost mine on the old Passat, which didn’t have a plastic string because Germans look down on that low-grade GM type of stuff. It was precisely machined to notch over the top of the filler door and if you left it off, then you might as well go back your Big Gulp and trailer park, useless American (I’m paraphrasing actual VW advertising from the 90s here).
A $5 replacement from CarQuest did the trick. The OE version was like $30.

I saw a guy drive off with the fuel nozzle still in his car. It was cool to see the disconnect work. It was funny watching him try to put it back together before the gas station attendant noticed.

I’ve did this once... and then went through a drive through car wash! I freaked out, and went directly to Wal-mart and dumped in about 8 bottles of dry gas. Never had a moments trouble, but you better believe I was sweating for a while afterwards.

On my old 760 Turbo I drove off like that...going down the highway I heard a fwack like a stick or something had whacked the side of the car and didn’t think much of it. When got out at home I realized the whole fuel filler door had blown off.
Turns out Volvo skimped in that area and tons of owners have had them blown off in car washes...but I’m the only one that I’m aware of that had their’s run for freedom purely to escape the owner’s boneheadedness.
So at least that didn't happen to you.

We won’t talk about the time that I locked my keys in the car while it was parked at the pump.

Don’t worry, I hear the man card isn’t all that great anyway: no cash back, no rewards points, no concierge service, and doesn’t even build your credit.

Also comes with restrictions on what is socially acceptable. It’s so much better without one.

Did that once in HS, the smoke after I parked gave it away.

I was watching the huge box truck at the pump next to me, didn’t want him to swing it too close to my car. In my hesitance to grab the receipt and get back in the car and move, I forgot to cap and flap it.

I’ve changed oil on a few cars in my mechanic days that had the cap off or missing. A surprising few still had full oil, no mess, and for some the cap was sitting right there on the strut tower or elsewhere near the motor.

Air resistance closes the door for you. If you were on the highway, there would have been enough speed, it usually closes itself around 50 (or it did on the vehicle I tried it with).

In my old Neon it ran better without the 710 cap on. Burned less oil. Thing had issues with the PCV system.

Back when I had a GM truck who’s radio would stay on after turning off the ignition (until opening the door) I locked my keys in it. TWICE. I would sit in it, engine off, radio on, listening to the end of the song that was playing and then exit the truck, forgetting to grab the keys.

I watched a SUV with IL plates do that. Drove off and went down the road, never to be seen again. Nozzle still stuck in the filler.
My wife works at a gas station, and sees it all the time. I should ask her how much the break off nozzle ends cost...

You definitely score more points if you drag the hose behind you.

Quite possibly the greatest automobile related invention in the last 50 years is the keypad on Ford cars. It is now impossible to lock my keys in the truck. In fact I do it on purpose when I go skiing or biking so I don’t have to worry about losing the keys.
